Cultural Perspective
“Rainbow Crow” has good cultural traits relating to the time that it was told in the Native American culture. It shows that the Lenni Lenape Tribe believed in some sort of spirits or gods as they sent a messenger to the heavens asking Kijiamuh Ka'ong to think of warm thoughts so that the snow would melt and it would warm up. The folktale uses animals as its characters demonstrating their respect of animals. They describe the animals with adjectives such as “wise” for the owl, “tricky” and “untrustworthy” for the coyote, “steady and stable” for the turtle and “beautiful” for the bird. The folktale also demonstrates the tribe’s values such selflessness and self sacrifice for the good of the community. This is established through the crow making the treacherous journey to Kijiamuh. The selflessness and courage is shown in the story which describes how they believe people should act in the community.
